See maritime accident videos at: https://www.osha.gov/video/shipyard_accidents/volume1.html $$$ Saved By a ONE COAT Paint System BACKGROUND: In the case of a pontoon deck coating, or say, coating the underwater hull of a floating dry dock, the typical number of individual coats applied is 6 for a pontoon deck to reach the recommended 40 mil thickness, and 4 coats to achieve a 25 mil hull paint thickness. The first coat is always the most expensive because it includes set up costs. Additional coats cost 70% of the first coat. Each coat takes the same labor time to apply, although another coat can be applied while the previous coat is still being applied further down the deck or hull. But, all the coats added together is total time. And time in a shipyard is expensive. Plus, the more coats that have to be applied, the greater the chance of a weather delay or moisture contamination between coats. LABOR & MATERIAL: In talking to shipyards across the U.S., average labor rates from East Coast to Gulf Coast to West Coast are in the neighborhood of $27-$30/hour for coating applications. In Asia, they are lower and depend on the area (China vs. South Korea vs. Singapore, for example). But, using U.S. labor rates and then converting the hourly rate to an average burdened labor cost (to include all the overhead costs for all members of the application team and the time it takes to cover X square feet) per square foot of applied coating, the labor cost to coat one square foot of steel is $4.25/sq. ft. SUMMARY: As is evident, the total labor and material for applying the more expensive but single coat of CeRam-Kote SPG is less than 1/3 the cost of applying a less expensive coating that requires 6 coats to achieve the 40 mils required. A. Even if the labor cost in Asian shipyards were ½ of U.S. labor costs, CeRam-Kote would still be less expensive by far. B. And if only a 25 mil coating were required for the underwater hull, CeRam-Kote SPG still comes in lower in total cost. C. The owner receives a 5 year warranty for the 40 mil CeRam-Kote system vs. a 1 year warranty for the other choice, as well as all the superior features that CeRam-Kote has to offer because of its ceramic particle loading: flexibility, adhesion, abrasion / impact resistance, and perm factor.
